GMLR is a road project being built by the BMC to connect Mumbai’s western and eastern suburbs. It links the Western Express Highway near Goregaon to the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund.
The total length of the project is 12.2 km. It is not just a road; it includes flyovers, road widening, and twin tunnels running under Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This makes it the first Mumbai link road with a tunnel section.
The twin tunnels are 4.70 km each and run at a depth of 20 to 160 metres below the park. They are being connected to each other every 300 metres for safety and ventilation. Since there are no surface level ventilation outlets, the tunnel will not disturb the forest above it.
The total project cost is around Rs 14,000 crore, with the tunnel portion alone costing about Rs 6,301 crore. PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the tunnel work on July 13, 2024. The project is being built in four phases.

Goregaon Mulund Link Road Latest Updates & Progress 2026
Work on GMLR has picked up speed this year, though the project has also seen some delays. Here is where things stand as of July 2026.
Flyover on the Goregaon side:
The 1.2 km flyover between Dindoshi Court and Dadasaheb Phalke Film City was earlier targeted to open by May 31, 2026. That deadline was missed due to alignment delays and the BMC has now revised the opening to September 2026. Major civil construction on the flyover is reportedly complete, with finishing and safety work underway.??
Tunnel work:
This is where the real action is right now. The launching shaft at Film City, Goregaon, has been fully excavated. As of July 30, 2026, the first Tunnel Boring Machine has been fully assembled and is ready to start excavation. This TBM uses Earth Pressure Balance technology, built to cut through Mumbai’s hard basalt rock. Actual tunnel boring is expected to begin soon after.
Revised timeline:
Earlier, the tunnel was expected to be ready by October 2028. Some recent reports now point to a slightly later window, around February 2029, for tunnel completion with the full 12.2 km corridor becoming operational only after that.??

Goregaon Mulund Link Road Route Map
GMLR runs across Mumbai’s northern suburbs, connecting the western side to the eastern side. It passes through some of the most congested pockets of the city, using a mix of flyovers, road widening and tunnels to avoid traffic snarls on the surface.??
The route starts at the Western Express Highway near Goregaon. From here, a flyover takes traffic from Dindoshi Court, takes a turn near Ratnagiri Junction and descends towards Dadasaheb Phalke Film City at the edge of Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
From Film City, the road goes underground. Twin tunnels run beneath SGNP connecting Film City in Goregaon to Khindipada in Mulund. This is the longest and most complex stretch of the entire project, since it passes under protected forest land.??
On the Mulund side the road comes back over ground. A flyover package including a cable-stayed structure at Dr Hedgewar Chowk connects the tunnel exit to the Eastern Express Highway at Mulund.
